Diver Medical Insurance Companies

Do you really need supplemental diver medical insurance coverage?

The answer is probably yes.  Accidents do happen in diving.  The problem with most traditional medical insurance plans is that they may not cover treatment for diving or snorkeling related injuries (such as a hyperbaric chamber) or the emergency medical evacuation expenses related to those injuries.  Traditional USA health insurance plans may also not provide any benefits if you are outside the USA.  Some traditional employee disability or life insurance policies may also have exclusions for injuries or deaths related to diving activities.

These are the 5 major diver medical insurance companies:

    DiveAssure

    Divers Alert Network (DAN)

    DiveSafe

    DSI

    PADI

Benefits offered by diver medical insurance companies may include:  emergency medical evacuation, medical treatment for the injury, benefits in foreign or USA locations, disability benefits, death benefits, accommodation and airline benefits, vacation cancellation or interruption benefits, and lost diving equipment costs.  Check with the specific insurance plans regarding their particular benefits and exclusions, as each company plan is different.
